Tang Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the duo exhibition of Rizal Hasan and Wannita Tankeng, “Whispering Horizons,” at our Bangkok space from February 1 to March  9, 2025. This exhibition will showcase more than 20 artworks from both artists.

The horizon symbolizes the boundaries of the known world while hinting at an invitation to the unknown. “Whispering,” on the other hand, serves as a metaphor for subtle yet profound inner perceptions that are often overlooked. The exhibition, titled Whispering Horizons, showcases the distinctive creations of Rizal Hasan and Wannita Tankeng, exploring how individuals find meaning amidst the complexities of reality and the fluidity of perception. Through their works, Hasan conveys inner tranquility using geometric compositions and vibrant colors, while Tankeng blurs the boundaries between reality and imagination through the fluidity of light and shadow. Together, they construct an aesthetic space centered on the concept of “boundaries” - both as constraints and as starting points for freedom.

Rizal Hasan’s art is deeply influenced by everyday life and cultural memory. He masterfully combines geometric forms, popular culture, and Indonesian traditional mythology, using bright colors to depict the tension between contemporary anxiety and inner peace. In his series Watering the Thoughts in Our Mind, Hasan’s gentle imagery reflects a yearning for psychological balance, while works like Calm Your Mind and Be Grateful and Just Relax emphasize the importance of slowing down to resist the overwhelming influx of information. French philosopher Michel Foucault’s theory of “Care of the Self” underscores how individuals reconstruct their subjectivity through meditation or creative practices. Hasan’s work is a direct response to this philosophy, offering not only a therapeutic approach to visual storytelling but also a critique of the fast-paced modern lifestyle. His art invites viewers to step away from external chaos and return to a place of inner peace.

In contrast to Hasan’s geometric order, Wannita Tankeng’s creations focus on the interaction between light and transparent objects, exploring the visual transformations of everyday items through the refraction of light. In her Plastic Aesthetics series, Tankeng captures subtle variations in light to transform mundane objects into new visual forms. Meanwhile, in works Ethereal Rose and Moonlit Lily, she combines the beauty of nature with emotional narratives, presenting a poetic expression that transcends reality. By manipulating light, Tankeng reveals the limitations of perception and invites viewers to reimagine their relationship with the world and themselves. Her work extends sensory experience while reshaping cognition, offering an artistic journey that bridges the seen and the unseen.

Despite their contrasting styles, the two artists find resonance in their shared exploration of “boundaries.” Hasan emphasizes inner order and tranquility through geometry and color, while Tankeng expands the possibilities of reality through the fluid interplay of light and shadow. Together, they elevate art beyond mere visual pleasure, transforming it into a profound bridge for emotional connection and self-reflection. In this process, art becomes a language for reinterpreting the self and the world, guiding viewers toward deeper existential insights.

The horizon is not just an endpoint but an invitation to the unknown. In the artistic worlds of Hasan and Tankeng, the horizon symbolizes a dialogue between the self and the world - finding order within chaos and discovering meaning in the midst of disorder. In the complexities of life, it is perhaps only by listening to the whispers of our inner selves that we can uncover our truest identities.

RIZAL HASAN

b. 1992, Gresik, East Java, Indonesia

Rizal Hasan graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication Design, from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta, Indonesia and is currently based in Sewon, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Having had an early interest in drawing since his early childhood, Hasan continued to pursue his passion for creating throughout the years, entering and participating in numerous painting competitions.  While studying visual communication design, he was inspired by pop artists such as KAWS and Takakshi Murakami, which led him to create a series of new works and to enter the 2017 UOB Painting of the Year, earning him a finalist position and subsequent exhibitions and collaborations that followed.

Drawing from everyday experiences - from comics, films, music, philosophies, as well as Indonesian traditional myths reflecting roots of his culture and upbringing, Hasan creates colorful and graphic canvases that make you want to take a closer look.

For his new exhibition, Hasan explores what tranquility and peace of mind means to him.  While the world is spiraling into chaos, and with our generation highly engaged in social media and being overstimulated by both the speed and tremendous amount of information being given to us, the artist is actively learning to slow down. Rediscovering how to balance life, how to calm the mind and remove noise, has been an essential and necessary focus for the artist in recent years.  Not only is this exploration central to his artworks created, but the process of creating itself is also a therapeutic and calming endeavor.  Through this new series, he hopes to bring a sense of calm amongst chaos as you view the exhibition and escape from the outside world.

Selected exhibitions include: “Tutti Frutti”, Tang Contemporary Art, Bangkok (2022); “Habitat”, Museum of Toys, Jakarta (2021); “A Letter to Basquiat #1”, Artemis Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2020); “A Letter to Basquiat #2”, Langgeng Art Gallery, Yogyakarta (2020); “A Series of Mini Exhibitions”, JNM, Yogyakarta (2019); “100 Years of Widaya”, Ruang Dalam, Yogyakarta (2019).

WANNITA TANKENG

b. 1999, Phuket, Thailand

Wannita Tankeng graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang and her Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) from Silpakorn University.

Wannita has a keen interest in the interplay of light and color as it strikes objects, refracts, and reflects, creating new 'images' and perspectives which are derived and reinterpreted from the original. This fascination and exploration of lights are transformed into semi-abstract creations through the observation of transparent objects. The distortions of light transform images we see with the naked eye, into new shapes and hues, offering intriguing and novel viewpoints.

The artist’s interest began while noticing and observing how light interacts with everyday objects, such as glasses, water bottles, and other transparent materials commonly found in daily life. Over time, the work evolved to incorporate other elements of nature, such as Wannita’s most recent works, investigating flowers as her central theme. Flowers, beyond their inherent beauty, possess a magical quality, capable of conveying sincere emotions and stories. They reflect the simple and organic yet captivating beauty found in everyday life.

Wannita’s works are imbued with vibrant colors and intricate imagery, inviting viewers to imagine and explore the newfound beauty that emerges through these reflections.

Selected solo exhibitions include: “Selenophiles”, Art Focus Bangkok (2024); “When the Daisy Bloom”, Sky View Hotel Bangkok (2023).  Select group exhibitions include: “Paradise of Eden”, L.O.F.
